A graduate school for music education

The in-depth study involved in doing a doctorate will qualify PhD students of music education to consolidate and expand their academic careers. Several music academies and universities in Germany and Austria have joined together as partners in a “Consortium of graduate schools for music education”. The qualification consists of four components. 180 credit points are required to graduate, of which 90 credit points can be earned for the doctoral thesis.

Component 1 consists of a modular study program offered jointly by the participating academies and updated each semester. This consists of teaching units in music education pitched at a high academic level with a focus on academic work and research. Exchanges and opportunities for networking allowing doctoral candidates to build up contacts in the academic and professional world will be systematically promoted for all disciplines.

        30 credit points

        Component 4

        • Doctoral thesis to be defended in a disputation or viva voce at the home institution. The academic degree will be awarded in accordance with the doctoral regulations of the respective partner institution.

        90 credit points

        Why participate?

        • The doctoral study program is embedded in a structure supported by a community of music education students and teachers from various academies and universities.
        • Music education and interdisciplinary exchanges will be supported and contacts established with the scientific and professional world.
        • Doctoral candidates promote cooperation and collaboration in research and teaching of music education.
        • Doctoral studies contribute to producing a new generation of music education specialists.
        • All four components offer options. In particular, Component 2 “personal study” allows the program to be tailored to individual needs and requirements.
        • The system of graduate school music education as a consortium of several institutions furthers the mobility of doctoral students

        Who can participate?

Doctoral students in music education may do their doctorate at the Music Education Graduate School if their home institution is a member of the “Consortium of graduate schools for music education”.
