Department 3 - Performing Arts - represents the broad artistic spectrum of the performing arts with its many fields and genres both in public institutions and on the free arts scene and comprises the subject areas: Singing, Acting, Dance (consisting of a B.A. program in Dance and an M.A. program in Contemporary Dance Education), and Performing Arts Management and Directing (consisting of a B.A. program in Directing in Theater and an M.A. program in Performing Arts and Music Management).
The mission of Department 3, from which it derives its identity, is to prepare our students for the reality of working in the performing arts and to support them as they embark on their professional careers. The Department also seeks to go beyond the confines of the university and to be a driving force in the performing arts, introducing new concepts, techniques, formats, and publications. Its activities are motivated by the principles of continuous development, presence, and visibility. As well as simply being curious about current developments in the performing arts, we also seek to promote a lively culture of debate, to engage in constant reflection, and to forge a broad network of connections.
Department 3 is in constant flux. Our core mission is to offer degree programs with a strong profile, to maintain close links with other parts of the university and with the outside world, and to make an active contribution. We develop, realize, and review our common goals not only with the Department Council and the Dean’s Office as decision-making bodies but also in working sessions, symposia, and future-oriented conferences.
Department 3 is also a member of the Hessian Theater Academy, and the directors of its degree programs are represented on the Academy’s board. This enables us to develop project-based links between the degree programs and theaters in Hessen. The only one of its kind in Germany, this cooperation allows students to gain practical stage experience in their future professions even before they graduate and to make contacts in the field within the various Hessian degree programs. Our aim is to continually develop and promote new forms of collaboration with the Hessian Theater Academy.
Above and beyond its work with the Hessian Theater Academy, the Department also cooperates with a whole range of other German and international institutions in order to prepare students as well as possible for the constantly changing field of the performing arts.
