IEMA Ensemble (International Ensemble Modern Academy)
To realise their own educational ideas, to pass on their musical inheritance, and to support new forms of contemporary artistic creativity: these are the goals the members of the Ensemble Modern set themselves in founding the International Ensemble Modern Academy (IEMA) in 2003. Today, IEMA offers a broad range of educational activities and projects. Its main focus is the one-year Master’s Degree Course »Contemporary Music«, offered since 2006 in cooperation with the Frankfurt Academy of Music and Performing Arts: instrumentalists, conductors, sound directors and composers work for an entire year on 20th and 21st century repertoire, together with the Ensemble Modern’s musicians as well as renowned composers and conductors such as Friedrich Cerha, Peter Eötvös, Heiner Goebbels, Heinz Holliger, Helmut Lachenmann, Wolfgang Rihm and Hans Zender. Performing as IEMA Ensemble with varying line-ups, the instrumentalists present the results of their work, including numerous world premieres, in more than 20 concerts each year in Germany and abroad, at venues and festivals such as ZKM | Centre for Art and Media Technology in Karlsruhe, at the Witten Days of New Chamber Music, the Kurt Weill Festival Dessau and the Gaudeamus Muziekweek. In 2013 the IEMA Ensemble’s CD »Euclidian Abyss« was released by Ensemble Modern Media.
