Laura Hicks (CAN) is a dancer, performance maker, teacher, and certified Pilates instructor. She graduated from Claude Watson School for the Arts and the Toronto Ballet Ensemble, attended the University of Calgary in Kinesiology and Dance, and holds a BA in International Development Studies from McGill University.
Laura is invested in a dance and movement practice that deals with deepening one's sense of awareness and perception, a curiosity about movement patterning and intention, and work with image, state and voice. Her work is inspired by a study, and love for improvisation and contact improvisation, Bartenieff Fundamentals, functional anatomy, Grotowski and Action Theatre. Companies that she has worked with who have had a great influence on her artistic perspective include MACHiNENOiSY, Restless Productions, EDAM Dance, Random Scream (BE), and the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange.
Laura has been living in Berlin since 2012 and collaborating with Kovàcs/O'Doherty while presenting her own solo improvisations in Berlin and elsewhere and networking with the European CI teaching community. Craving structure and space to deepen her research into movement, performance, and facilitation, embracing all these modes as part of a more exhaustive creative practice, Laura joined MAtzp in 2013.
