Orla Mc Carthy was born in 1993 in Ireland. She began her dance training in 2000 in Ireland at the Shawbrook School of Dance where she undertook the Royal Academy of Dance Graded Syllabus and Vocational graded syllabus of ballet for which she was awarded distinction in her final exams. Orla performed as a member of the ‘Shawbrook Youth Dance Company’ from 2005 - 2012 under choreographers including Olwen Grindley, Simon Rice, Chantal McCormick and Kristina SØrensen. With the youth company, she performed in the Irish Youth Dance Festival, The Pavilion theatre, Dublin and in the Aberdeen International Youth Arts Festival, His Majesty’s theatre, Scotland. Orla contested and placed in the Irish National Dance Awards. In 2012 Orla began her studies for a Bachelor in Classical and Contemporary Dance at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst, Frankfurt. During her studies she performed in original pieces by Iván Peréz, Menghan Lou, Marc Spradling, Marguerite Donlon, and Dieter Heitkamp. She also performed repertoire from Yuval Pick and William Forsythe . In addition to her studies at the Hochschule , Orla participated in various projects including ‘Project §301’ 2013, Frankfurt LAB, ‘Der Waldbach’ 2014, with Seyed Sina Sadeghpour and theatre piece ‘Glasaugenblicke aus dem Wald heraus’ from director Philipp Stange in Naxos Halle, Frankfurt. She performed in Dieter Heitkamp’s current project ‘GOING INTO CONTACT – a permeable spiralinstallation’ in both Tanzhaus nrw, Dusseldorf, and Akademie der Kuenste, Berlin. During the month of August, 2014 Orla took part in the residency ‘BROOKDANCE’14’, under the mentorship of director Chantal McCormick and Marguerite Donlon at the Shawbrook Dance Centre and performed devised works in both Ireland and Slovenia.
