The Institute offers a 4-semester independent Masters course in the "Historical Practice of Interpretation". The main focus of this course is on Baroque and Classical repertoire on period instruments. Special courses are also held on Mediaeval and Renaissance music. Regular seminars and workshops teach the theory behind the basic principles of performance practice of Early Music. These courses are taught by both university staff and international guests (performing musicians and musicologists) with specialised knowledge of the subjects who attach great importance to putting academic findings into practice.

This course of postgraduate studies is designed to provide a comprehensive and professional training for musicians who wish to work in the field of «historical practice of music». The audition ensures that all requirements are met to allow students to consolidate and expand the knowledge and abilities already acquired in former courses.

 

Funding

Students may be awarded grants according to the German act governing student grants (BAföG) for this course.

 

Dates and periods stipulated

  • Start of programme: summer and winter semester
  • Regular duration of studies: 4 semesters
  • Degree: Master

 

Currently the following main subjects may be chosen in the course:

  • Vocal (main subject teacher of department FB III; only possible as part of a postgraduate course "vocal" and core subject HIP)
  • Baroque bassoon / dulcian (Christian Beuse)
  • Fortepiano (Prof. Harald Hoeren)

All instruments are period instruments dating from between the 16th and the 19th centuries.

 

Other subjects:

Programme of study

The course comprises 60 minutes' weekly training in the core subject as well as tuition in the following subjects:

  • Harpsichord (30 minutes)
  • Chamber music, orchestra projects (according to semester plan)
  • Basso continuo (15 minutes)
  • Musicology, periods and styles, performance practice, sources, pre-17th century music projects (3 hours)

 

Admission requirements

  • Completed undergraduate degree course: German qualifications: Diplom-MusikerIn (music degree); Künstlerische Reifeprüfung (final examination from a school of music); Erste Staatsprüfung für das Lehramt an Gymnasien für Musik (degree in teaching music at secondary schools); Music Teacher Diplom; Church music (A-Examination) or international examinations or degrees comparable to these courses
  • Successful audition, performed on a period instrument or on period and modern instruments.
