The HfMDK realises numerous projects within the range of cultural education as well as interdisciplinary joint ventures with important cultural institutions in Hesse and throughout Germany.

The HfMDK is also involved in the ongoing process of developing structures for academic research. Society today assigns this responsibility not only to universities and specialised institutes, but also to universities of applied sciences and art academies. The first sponsored research projects currently being carried through in teams at the HfMDK include

- academic support of  „Primacanta“ and
- „Das musikalische Selbstkonzept“
- "The musical self concept".

Both practice-oriented and academic projects are integrated into the curriculum, giving fresh impetus and ideas for practical learning processes and for reflection, as well as providing ideas for subjects for students' term papers or theses.
