Otto Akkanen is dance artist, photographer, bodywork practitioner, and a teacher.
He was introduced to contact improvisation and contemporary dance in his twenties, becoming so involved that he went to study dance for three years, graduating from the vocational school of Outokumpu, Finland. He and has since then worked as an artist performing his solo works, while also performing in different improvisation groups, and with choreographers and video makers such as TTTK, Ronja Verkasalo, Hanna Lappalainen and Lena Muchnaya.
As a teacher he has been working in Eastern Europe, Central Europe, and South America. For the past 6 years his most inspiring teachers have been his fellow teachers and dancers of the Helsinki CI community. Lately, his teaching has been influenced by his involvement with the lab group ”Mind the Point,” researching awareness and perception through movement and touch.
His overall sources of inspiration are his background in social work (BA degree in 2001), oceans and rivers, poetry, philosophy and good music everywhere. His interests revolve around power and hierarchies, politics, strucKtures and the relationships between beings, ideas, and categories. Thus, he enrolled in MAztp to study and understand more of these things.
