Exmatriculation terminates a student's membership of the University. Students may leave the university at the end a semester (31.03. or 30.09.) subject to a written request. This request has to be signed by the library and the University administration. When exmatriculating, students must submit their course registration book and the completed request form.

For a late exmatriculation a fee of 15.00 euros is due.

An exmatriculation certificate specifying period and dates of study may be issued, provided the student has filed a correct request for exmatriculation. This certificate may be required e.g. for later enrolment at another institute of higher education and for pension purposes (in order to clarify your pension account with the BfA (German statutory pension insurance scheme).

Possible reasons for exmatriculation:

  • Having passed final examination
  • Failing an intermediate or final examination which is not possible to re-sit
  • Enrolment at another institute of higher education
  • Being drafted for compulsory military or civilian service
  • Giving up or interrupting studies

A student will also officially be removed from the roll if he/she fails to re-enrol properly or if he/she fails to submit proof of academic achievement as foreseen in the examination or study regulations for a period of two years .
